In Parshat Vayakhel, the Mishkan (Tabernacle) was constructed using rare, unicorn-like skins (called “tachash” in Hebrew)—materials known for their uniqueness, vibrancy, and incredible strength. Their presence teaches us that sacred spaces are created when uniqueness is recognized and celebrated.
This week, we celebrate the resolution of the Yeshiva University v. YU Pride Alliance lawsuit, paving the way for the establishment of an official LGBTQ+ club on campus. More specifically, we honor the strength, resilience, and bravery of the queer students whose advocacy over many years has led to this moment.
Like the mythical unicorn, these students transformed what once seemed impossible into reality, demonstrating the power of authenticity and collective action. Just as the tachash brought beauty and strength to the Mishkan, queer Jewish students bring beauty, uniqueness, and resilience to our community—not in spite of their queerness, but precisely because of it.
May their courage inspire other queer students and Jewish institutions to advocate for and create official spaces that affirm and celebrate queer identities—building communities rooted in belonging, visibility, and pride.
