Parsha Reflections: Parshat Chayei Sara

Parsha Reflections: Parshat Chayei Sara

This week’s parsha is Chayei Sarah which literally means “the life of Sarah.”

Even though it’s the parsha where Sarah dies, it’s not named after her death. Instead, it’s named after her life: her legacy, her impact, her light that continues long after she’s gone.

With Trans Day of Remembrance next week, this message feels especially poignant. We honor the trans lives we’ve lost not only in grief, but by lifting up their beauty, courage, brilliance, and the ways they expanded what’s possible for all of us.

And we honor the trans people who are here – alive, vibrant, holy – not just surviving, but building lives of joy, dignity, and truth. Chayei Sarah reminds us that a life is measured by how it is lived: with authenticity, courage, and impact.

Trans people continue to redefine courage, expand family, reimagine community, and illuminate our world. That is legacy. That is life that continues.

As we read Chayei Sarah, may we commit to two sacred tasks:

1) remembering those we’ve lost: their stories, laughter, gifts, and light

2) protecting and celebrating those who are here: ensuring not only survival, but thriving, joy, and a future

L’chaim: To life. To trans lives. To memory, to legacy, and to a world where every trans person gets to live fully, freely, and in peace.
