Parsha Reflections: Parshat Pinchas

Parsha Reflections: Parshat Pinchas

In this week’s parsha we meet the daughters of Tzelofchad. After Tzelofchad died, leaving no sons, his five daughters went before Moshe, the priest, and the entire Jewish people to advocate for their rights to inherit the land their father left behind.

This was a huge deal because at that time, only sons could inherit property. Plus, it wasn’t the norm to ask for laws to be changed. Moshe spoke to Hashem who then sided with the sisters and granted them property.

We don’t know if Bnot Tzelofchad spoke loudly with confidence, if they timidly whispered, or if there was a mix of all of the above. Whatever the volume, we know that they believed there was a chance for them to shape their own futures.

At JQY we believe in the power of advocating for yourself and asking for what you need. Just because something isn’t given to you, does not mean you cannot attempt to move the needle, even if that means venturing into uncharted territory.

You have the power to shape history.
You just need a little holy chutzpah.
